What is a Charity Worker visa?

The Charity Worker Visa route is for individuals who have a job offer to undertake voluntary work in the UK for up to 12 months.

It allows an applicant to stay for up to 12 months or the time given to you on your certificate of sponsorship plus 14 days, whichever is the shorter of the two.

If an applicant wishes to remain for longer and wants to do paid work, they should consider another one of the UK work visa routes.

What can I do while on a Charity Worker visa?

You can do unpaid charity work for the sponsor and can also study or take a second job provided it is in the same sector as the main job or for a role on a shortage occupation list, without the need to get another visa.

You cannot receive payment for any of the work you do in the UK or take on a permanent job and you cannot have access to public funds.

What are the requirements for a Charity Worker visa?

To be eligible for this visa:

  • You must be over the age of 18
  • The charity work must meet certain specified requirements
  • You must hold a valid certificate of sponsorship for the role
  • You genuinely intend or are able to undertake the role for which you are being sponsored
  • You satisfy the financial requirements
  • You have not had permission as a religious worker or charity worker in the previous 12 months
  • You do not fall for refusal under the general grounds of refusal
  • You have provided a TB certificate if required

What documents will I need to provide for the application?

You will need to provide your passport and certificate of sponsorship reference number. You will also need to provide evidence that you have sufficient monies to support yourself in the UK, such as bank statements and a TB test if applicable.

Do you need a sponsor to obtain a Charity Worker visa?

You must have a certificate of sponsorship from a licensed employer before you can apply to come to work in the UK on a Charity Worker Visa.

How long does it take to receive a Charity Worker visa?

You can apply for a visa up to 3 months before the day you are due to start work in the UK. You will get a decision within 3 weeks if you are outside the UK and 8 weeks if you are inside the UK.
